What and How?

What to Expect

An initial consultation is used to highlight your individual needs and wishes and consider fitting options. Your questions and views are of key importance, as are ways and means of ensuring your success, and we will be considering therapy terms to suit your aims and circumstances.

If you choose to go ahead, hour long sessions will generally be held on a weekly or fortnightly basis. Timely summaries and reviews help to keep the process purposeful. Monthly sessions, follow up and occasional sessions are further fairly popular options.

The number of sessions undertaken varies from very few, through the more common 8 – 12, to longer explorations. Ending will usually coincide with a general sense of coping well independently and of sufficient resolution of the original issue.

Those keen on particular methods, including therapy trainees, may request techniques from CBT, Psychodynamic, Humanistic, MCBT and Jungian art therapy methods (the latter often popular with child and art therapy undergraduates).

‘We often have very little empathy for our own thoughts and feelings, and frequently try to suppress them by dismissing them as weaknesses’

How it Works

Personal Consultancy integrates psychotherapy, counselling and psychological coaching approaches into an accessible, flexible ‘talking cure’; addressing past hurts, present situations, future intentions and overall personal development.

The process is often described as a natural conversation, encompassing the relief of sharing in confidence, personal insights into both blocks and strengths, and the challenge and satisfaction of change and growth. This is a sensitive and practical approach which uses a wide range of individually tailored methods whilst often drawing most extensively from the inherent psychological ‘intelligence’ present in each unique individual.

It is not uncommon to begin therapy for a particular issue and find that you are discovering a great deal about yourself, or to engage in more depth self-exploration and find the process useful for resolving everyday problems. We follow your trains of thought, feeling, action and intention together, seeking understanding and relief from the destructive/ regressive, whilst giving increasingly greater voice to your character and healthy instincts and any skills, techniques, and conditions that will help you to thrive.

‘The key to the ability to change is a changeless sense… of who you are, what you are about and what you value’
